1. Analytical Chemistry
In analytical chemistry, when using acid to determine the concentration of alkali, hydrochloric acid is generally used for titration. Titration with strong acid can make the endpoint more obvious, thereby making the results more accurate. At 1 standard atmospheric pressure, 20.2% hydrochloric acid can form an azeotropic solution, which is commonly used as a reference substance for quantitative analysis at a certain pressure. The concentration at constant boiling will change with the change of air pressure.
2. Pickled steel
An important use of industrial hydrochloric acid is for pickling steel. Before processing iron or steel, hydrochloric acid can be used to remove surface rust or iron oxides. Usually, a hydrochloric acid solution with a concentration of 18% is used as an acid cleaner to clean carbon steel.
3. Preparation of organic compounds
Another major use of industrial hydrochloric acid is to prepare organic compounds, such as vinyl chloride, dichloroethane, precursor bisphenol A of polycarbonate, catalytic adhesive polyvinyl formal, ascorbic acid, etc., which are raw materials for synthesizing PVC plastics. Enterprises usually do not use commercially available PVC when synthesizing, but use internally prepared hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid also has significant applications in the pharmaceutical industry.
4. Used for flame color reaction
Flame reaction is often used to test metals or their compounds, and platinum wires used for testing need to be washed with dilute hydrochloric acid to remove the influence of impurity elements. Before testing the substance, the platinum wire should be cleaned with hydrochloric acid and then burned on a flame until the flame turns its original color before conducting the experiment.
